THE WHEELING LIONS CLUB

THE LIONS TALE

AUGUST 1, 2008

WHEELING LIONS CLUB STEAK FRY:  Hopefully, by now you have made your reservations for the fourth annual Wheeling Lions Club Steak Fry to be held Saturday night, August 2, at Oglebay’s Camp Russell. It’s still not too late to purchase 50-50 tickets for this event or to bring in prizes for the Auction to be held that evening, as well. If you have any auction items, contact either Lion Mike Hooper or Lion Tom Gaudino immediately. A lot of hard work has already been put in to try to make this important fund-raiser for our club a success. Whatever help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

PICNIC CANCELLED: Plans to have a ``Family Day Picnic’’ during the morning and afternoon hours prior to the steak fry have been cancelled. Only 11 reservations were turned in as of last Wednesday’s meeting (July 23) and the Board of Directors decided to call this event off. The club still may attempt to hold another picnic later this summer. We will keep you posted.

AUGUST PROGRAMS: Lion Gene Fahey is the program director for this month. He has lined up a interesting array of guest speakers. Following is the list of August programs:

August 6: Joelle Ennis, Marketing and Community Relations Specialist for the City of Wheeling.

August 13: Don Rigby: Regional Economic Development Director for OVIBDC.

August 20: Megan Fahey: Presentation on her trip to Sidney, Australia for World Youth Day. Megan was one of 26 young adults accompanying Pope Benedict on a private boat during his harbor tour in Sidney.

August 27: Howard Monroe: Owner of WVLY Radio Station.

BUSY MONTH FOR EYEGLASS SCREENING COMMITTEE: During the month of July, The Wheeling Lions Club’s Eyeglass Screening Committee approved 42 eye examinations and the purchase of 42 eye glasses for needy Ohio County residents. The Board of Directors again wishes to thank Committee members John Wensyel, George Schramm and Camille Basinger for the many hours of work they devote to this important assignment throughout the year.

WHEELING LIONS MAKE CONTRIBUTION TO DISTRICT CAR SHOW: During the July 11 meeting of the Board of Directors, a motion was approved to make a major sponsor’s contribution of $1,000 to the seventh annual Special Car & Bike Show for Sight to be held on Labor Day, September 1 at Cabela’s. Proceeds from this very worthwhile event benefit the West Virginia Lions Sight Foundation.

SPAGHETTI DINNER PLANS PROGRESSING: The Wheeling Lions Club will be holding its second annual Spaghetti Dinner on Thursday, November 13 at the Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church. We will also honor Vance Memorial’s request that we do a light meal for a group of individuals on Wednesday, November 12, the day that the Spaghetti Dinner committee will be using the church facilities to begin preparing for Thursday night’s dinner. Lion Alice Romick has volunteered to prepare ``Sloppy Joes’’ as the main course for that meal. Make your plans now to support this year’s Spaghetti Dinner as either a volunteer worker or a patron. We had a great time last year when we showed a profit of over $700.

THANKS LION ED VAN LYNN, PDG:  Lion Nick Bedway wishes to thank Lion Ed Van Lynn, PDG, for filling in the past couple of weeks while the club secretary was away on vacation.
